It really was unfortunate how much he didn't enjoy the company of so many people at once. If he did, then this place would be perfect for him. The outskirts weren't so bad, but when it came to this hustling and bustling that the heart of Nexus was famous for, he could definitely go without. He did best when it was just himself and his two closest friends - even the puny and pathetic numbers of the Organization could sometimes get the better of him and.. Overwhelm the poor thing.
Talk about a culture shock.
"Move it, kid!" A large voice caught his attention - had he really been standing in the middle of the walkway, looking at the lights like some sort of awestruck idiot? And isn't that what he was, anyway? He didn't say anything as he felt himself being pushed to the side by the man's larger build - he took in a deep breath, letting his shoulders slump over as he exhaled a large sigh.
So much for going out and looking for work. Roxas, honestly, didn't feel like he had much more left in him for the rest of the day. Or night - or however time was supposed to work here. The sun never did rise, reminding Roxas heavily of the way The World That Never Was in its ceased day and night cycle. The moons here were differently shaped, but they still represented that same loneliness that the thirteenth was never able to truly comprehend or describe.
His empty chest ached for a few seconds as he took a seat on an unoccupied bench. His stomach was empty, but he didn't care. He could have gone home to his apartment, but for now, he didn't feel like he had it in him to move. Exhaustion was a normal, normal aspect of his life now, no matter how much he slept. He felt guilty, he felt alone, and he felt helpless, even with the Keyblade by his side. Was Sora incomplete all over again?
If he was, then it was his fault.
Was Axel still destroyed, after he'd done that to himelf?
Of course that was Roxas' fault.
Was.. His other friend, was she still...
His eyes drooped downward to look at his open hands, palms facing upward.
It's my fault.

It had been a couple of weeks since Axel had found himself in this strange world, or connection of worlds. He had heard them called links a couple of times. Well, whatever. It didn't matter so long as he survived. He was shocked that had considering he had allowed himself to fade. He had been trying to save Roxas, and help Sora. Sora's continued existence meant that Roxas stayed alive in a way as well and the Dusks had been ready to end that. So, he put everything into dispersing them since they wouldn't listen to his orders anymore.
That was then, this was now, and he had a job to do. Today's work was hunting down someone for one of the syndicates. This guy had been skipping out on them since he owed a growing amount of money. It was time to pay them back. First, he had to catch him and bring him to the big boss he was working for right now. Then he would be off to do his own thing again. This was a much better system than he had in the Organization. No reports, no one to really answer to. He just had to be fair to all the syndicates in Nexus so not to cross any of them, and he could keep getting jobs from everyone.
Maybe his skills as the blood hound of the Organization would work in his favor and he would offer only that to these groups. Being an informant he would save for others. He was good at collecting information as well, so he had been doing a little of that as well. Thus far it was working out. So he was hunting down one person and then he would take a day or two to himself.
Green eyes drifted over the crowd as he wandered through. Luckily, this was a mis-mash of odd groups of people so he didn't stand out that much out in the open. He would worry about hiding in the shadows once he found his target. Or one that had nothing to do with any job he had taken. His steps faltered when he saw the bright blond of someone he had considered a friend. Someone that had walked away from him but he still felt drawn to protecting, seeking out. Seek no longer. He hadn't thought to ever see Roxas again, but there he was, sulking on a bench.
The Flurry stepped up behind the small blond and reached to put a hand on his shoulder. Before he did, he froze. The last time they met hadn't exactly been a friendly encounter. He withdrew his hand before he touched the Key and tucked his hands into his pockets. "Somehow this picture looks incomplete. You need sea salt ice cream," Axel said just loud enough to draw attention to himself, trying to keep a mild tone. He didn't want to get snapped at, but he had been alone here long enough that even having a civil word with Roxas would be more than welcome.

If he hadn't of been careful, he could have easily dozed off. His eyelids had drooped as well as the corners of his mouth to a steady frown; he could feel sleep creeping up on him, even though he had snoozed the day away this morning. Or evening? Seriously, how did Nexus work again? Roxas normally kept a good track of the days in the Organization just because of his missions, but without those and without something to keep him awake until bedtime, he found himself losing himself and his sense of time.
He.. Couldn't help but feel as though it didn't matter much, anyway.
If he were in his finest form, he could have sensed someone coming up behind him, probably getting ready to mug him or something of the sort. Whatever - he didn't have anything on him... They could do what they pleased and leave him be. Whether he would be beaten to a pulp or simply abandoned, it didn't matter. Without anyone to call his friend, without a reason to exist, none of it mattered.
Somehow this picture looks incomplete. You need sea salt ice cream.
The world around him stopped, the air around him lay still. The noises of Nexus lessened to a state of death and the temperature around his body became warm as the sense of familiarity and flame washed over him. The blond's eyes slowly flickered open while his brain continued to block out any other senses. A slow and steady movement allowed his head to turn and his shoulders to shift in order to look behind him.
"Y-..." His voice failed, the tiniest noise able to be heard from his throat from a tone sounding so null. It was unlike him - or at least.. It was unlike what Axel thought of him. Laying eyes on the Flurry, though, was much different. His azure gaze looked lively, his lips parting in a state of disbelief. Was it.. Possible? It had to have been; or was this nothing more than a sick dream that would make him despise himself even more after he awoke? Axel - Axel's here -
Roxas' hand suddenly began to reach out, trying to see if the figure before him was there to begin with. When he touched the physical form of the eighth, his expression shifted to a bewildered shock, but a state of emotion unbeknownst to him. It was happy - overwhelmingly happy... But also.. Sad. He couldn't bring himself to figure it all out for now. Roxas ungracefully scrambled to his feet on top of the bench, whirling his arms forward and yanking the other as close as humanly possible.
Finally... He felt alive again.
He wanted to cry, but his eyes refused for now. Perhaps that was a good thing, after all. He did, however, begin to shake, hands turning to fists against Axel's upper back as though he were afraid that if he let go, this moment would be gone - he couldn't let that happen. He wouldn't.
"Took you long enough," He whispered using the sense of humor that the other Nobody in his arms had taught him throughout their days together. Axel had, of course, affected Roxas in far more ways than just one.

For a moment, he wasn't sure how to take Roxas' reaction. Being stared at wasn't really something he expected. Honestly, a glare seemed more appropriate. Axel shifted on his feet, wondering if this was a smart choice. While he knew how to survive just fine, some of the more "emotional" decisions he makes weren't exactly bright. This was Roxas, the one Nobody he became closest with. He had lost Saix over the years, their own plan helping to drive space between them. This small being had been the final straw that broke them apart.
Axel had managed to screw this up, too, so why bother trying to reach out? He had alienated himself from the Organization, put himself on the run trying to see him again. The Flurry had helped the blond's Somebody which made him an enemy of the very people he was supposed to be working with. Something about this kid had changed him and he had sought it out. He had died for it. Not that Roxas would care.
Or he cared a lot. A small sound escaped the redhead once Roxas had touched him, realized he was real, and launched himself at the taller Nobody. He stood frozen for a moment, shocked at the Key of Destiny was hugging him close. Well, with such a warm welcome, he couldn't just stand there and do nothing. He wrapped his arms around the smaller being. He hugged the blond close, the tension slowly easing out of his muscles when Roxas snarked at him.
"Do you know how hard it is to find a short blond with this many people? We're not in Twilight Town anymore," He retorted, acting as if he had been looking the entire time. The Flurry had thought he had been on his own and he wouldn't see anyone from "home" ever again. This was a happy accident made all the better by the fact that Roxas wasn't swinging a Keyblade at his head. That was a very welcome surprise.
Though, that look that had been on the kid's face hadn't been a pleasant one. If it had been possible to hold his once best friend closer, he would have at the thought of that look. "You okay, Roxy?" He asked softly. He didn't want to push or pry, but he did care about the little zombie. He wasn't great at showing that he cared, but this was a small way that he could handle.

Even at times like this, the Flurry was keen at making jokes out of a bad situation. They had been uprooted from their homes and.. For all they knew, things were falling into disarray without a single thing they could do. Part of Roxas, however, selfishly didn't want to let himself care. He wanted to let himself be happy and to not think about Sora, or how he could have been hurting Riku, or if Kairi was still safe and sound on Destiny Islands. He and Axel were safe, and they were together; why couldn't that just be enough?
Arms were quick to return the gesture that he had unwillingly bestowed upon the redhead. Of course, now that he was here and he was coherent as to what he'd done, he felt a sense of comfort that it was being reciprocated. Roxas' muscles found a way to relax and he rested the majority of his weight against the taller male's body. It was all he could do just to hold himself up - he'd been doing it all alone for far too long.
Back in the Organization, there were times when he enjoyed being alone in his room, able to close his eyes and get some rest. Nowadays, however, things had drastically changed. The concept of being alone made his stomach churn in discomfort and his empty chest ache without much reasoning behind it. He hated it. He hated this lonesomeness that shook him to his core without regard for anything it tainted. It... was painful.
All of that, if only for a few moments, found a way to melt down to nothing as he rested there against the Nobody he had learned to call his best friend. The two of them were inseparable, and because of the blond boy's foolish actions, they had been separated. A wall had been built between them due to Axel withholding information, but that could have been worked out. He made a stupid decision, one that he paid for every single day of his life.
"No." His voice cracked when he responded, his forehead resting against Axel's shoulder. The warmth was comforting and the scent of smokey cinnamon that was nothing but the Flurry of Dancing Flames brought him solace despite all of the things they'd been through. "But I'm definitely better than I was, now." It was the truth. He didn't have it in him to lie and say he was perfectly fine - he didn't have it in him to put on a fake smile. Roxas was broken, and he wasn't sure if that could be repaired. He wanted it to, and maybe with Axel's hands, he'd be able to put some pieces back into place.
"I don't know how long this is going to last, so.. I'm sorry." He voice was mixed with an airy whisper, one that showed how much he really did mean it. His tone was beaten-down, teetering on the edge of lifeless, though not quite to that point. "I'm sorry for leaving you behind and not listening to you. I'm... Stupid." The grip he had around the other's body tightened. "I'm not mad anymore. I think I was more angry at myself than anyone else. Please know that I never hated you.
He paused for a moment, a melancholy smile growing on his lips that wouldn't be seen.
"You're my best friend - I could never hate you."

The Flurry frowned a little as Roxas answered his question. Of course he wasn't okay. No matter how much it seemed like the blond wanted him close, no matter how tightly he clung to his own taller frame, he wasn't going to be okay. Axel had made sure of that. By withholding information it made sure to piss off the small being hanging on him. It had seemed important to protect the Key but it backfired. There was still a ton of things that Roxas didn't know that Axel felt he shouldn't have to carry. It wasn't just about the Keyblades and everything connected to them.
It was about him, too. There was so much darkness in his own past that he couldn't share that. It wasn't Roxas' cross to bear. The Flurry took a deep breath and cleared his throat. He was going to try not to poke too much at the pain he heard in the monotone voice the smaller Nobody answered in. He honestly didn't know what to say anyway. Roxas hadn't done anything to be mad at himself about. Everything that happened around him had been designed by the rest of the Organization. The few losses Roxas may have felt like a few of the other members might have been Axel's own fault. After all, it had been at his hand at least two of them faded.
Some of the other things had been because of Xemnas' plans. So, really, his small friend shouldn't feel guilty about anything. The redhead adjusted his grip on Roxas and lifted. He wasn't exactly heavy, but he wasn't light either. For something that didn't exist, the Keyblade bearer had a little weight to him. Regardless, the Flurry lifted him over the back of the bench and changed his stance to keep them balanced and upright. "Hey, don't worry about it, kid. We're fine," He said quietly. He wasn't sure how to better reassure Roxas since he didn't really want to talk about their issues. He was pretty good at ignoring them, so why break the pattern?
Green eyes glanced around at the neon lights and the bustling people around them. He wasn't sure if Roxas was really that tired that he had nearly fallen asleep on the bench, or just that upset. Well, if he knew this little pipsqueak as well as he used to, he knew one thing that would help a little. "I think someone needs some ice cream. Pick up those spirits. My little sunspot shouldn't be such a gloom cloud." He started forward toward the shop, uncaring about the looks he was getting. Sure, you don't see a tall redhead wrapped in a long black cloak carrying a small blond dressed the same way everyday, but really, they weren't that much of a spectacle. They just needed a little peace and some ice cream.

Hey don't worry about it, kid. We're fine.
A couple of pieces that had been scattered - a couple of fragments of himself that he was sure had been long gone by now returned with that simple statement. He knew that the hurt wouldn't just go away, but it would heal... If they worked at it. The thirteenth wasn't going to let this slip from the palms of his hands so easily. It wasn't every day that wretches such as him got so much as a first chance, let alone a second.
He had been so lost in those words he'd almost forgotten that he'd been picked up. Axel was easily able to handle his entire weight without much effort, and it made a small chuckle flow from his throat. How long had it been since he'd been given a reason to laugh? It made his stomach warm and his chest fill with a small something. Then he realized his feet failed to touch the ground, a heat making itself present against the front of his body.
Roxas' eyebrows arched almost pathetically - he was happy that Axel hadn't been able to see the change in his expression at that moment. Forgiven and hugged like this? What had he done to deserve this?
He found his hands turning to fists in the cloak hanging off of the redhead's shoulders, his comfort bringing on a bout of guilt and the fact that he was so damned undeserving of his kindness. Axel had always been that way, hadn't he? Going out of his way to put on a smile on "his sunspot's" face, no matter the cost. He never had to come up to the clocktower, he could have gone straight to bed. He didn't have to teach him all those things when he was nothing more than a zombie, but he did. And here he was again, picking him up when he was helpless.
Roxas really didn't deserve it.
"I'd like that." He cooed out in a shaky, trembling voice, refusing to let go just yet. He felt like he could stay here forever and never have to take on another worry, another care. He was safe in these arms - he was home. "More than anything," A whisper was tacked on at the end of his statement, barely audible but surely there. The boy's face found a place upon the hood attached to Axel's cloak at the shoulder; he buried into it, not feeling the need to lift up just yet.
He didn't want it to be shown how vulnerable he truly was, but at the same time it was something that he wanted the Flurry to understand.
That he didn't have it in him to be alone again. He didn't have it in him to be apart again.
And that leaving was the worst decision he'd ever had the misfortune of making. | COMMENTS | XXXXXX

The Flurry didn't make mention of the small shifts he could feel as Roxas moved in his arms. He could feel the tension coming and going. He knew there were things that were going through the blond's head that weren't being shared. Axel would wait for that to be offered up to him which was much more likely than the redhead sharing his feelings. He wasn't good at that at the best of the times. Everything that happened between the two of them was a can of worms that so didn't need to be opened up. He would be happy if they could ignore it indefinitely.
Unlikely, but for now an achievable goal. Roxas didn't need to be burdened with anything more than picking out the right ice cream to eat. Well, maybe not. Axel was just as capable of picking it out. Roxas' favorite ice cream had been his suggestion once upon a time. So, shifting the Key's weight so he could free up one of his arms, Axel adjusted the smaller Nobody to his side a little and supported his weight with one arm. That left him able to reach for the money he had recently earned from his last job.
He stepped up to the counter and looked at the various flavors. No sea salt. "I'm gonna need you to come out of your little hole, Roxy. I know my hood is nice, but you need to look at the flavors." He slowly went down the line, head down so Roxas didn't have to feel pressured to look up. If the blond mumbled that he didn't want to pick, then he would deal with that then. For now, he pointed through the glass as he glanced at the person waiting to help them. "Strawberry, please." It wasn't nearly what he wanted, or the other flavors that home used to offer.
He would have to do something about that, but he didn't have anywhere to put his ingredients to make something himself. A small pang of longing for the castle ran through him. Mostly he just wanted his kitchen back. He had been great at making meals, coming up with things that everyone ended up liking. Or most people anyway. Oh well. He didn't get a home and he would just have to deal with the regular bland flavors that Nexus had to offer tonight. He silently waited for a response from Roxas, or a motion that he wanted to get back on his own two feet.

For what felt like the longest time, the boy's eyes slid to a close and he was able to breathe. When he was with Sora, he didn't breathe - he didn't live. Now that he was back in the physical world, now that he was in a place where he could be touched, held and protected by someone who meant the world and more, he didn't know how to take it. After what he'd done, why was he shown such kindness?
After telling Axel that he couldn't be trusted, how could he be taken back oh-so-easily? He hadn't noticed that the redhead had started walking, carrying him to another location. He didn't care who saw and he certainly didn't care where they would end up. He couldn't let himself let go, not just yet.
"Oh-" He said quickly when the Flurry started talking to him, his mind honing in on the word and making sense of them, as jumbled as his thoughts were. The boy did as he was told, oceanic eyes that matched spheres of sky scanned the flavors that were able to be purchased. "Salted Caramel," He murmured quietly into the other male's ear, almost like how a shy child would speak in order to communicate with others through their guardian.
Roxas had been far too lethargic - all he could do, at this point, was let Axel carry him and keep him away from all of those bad thoughts. All of those broken memories and those fragmented pieces of reality he wished he would shun away into the realm of nonexistence. Eventually, he would have to atone for everything; apologies were only what they were. In the end, they couldn't fix the damaged and couldn't meld those pieces back together. There would have to be more.
When the two had gotten their ice cream, he took it in his small hands while he was carried to an isolated bench. The amount of people around them was lesser here, especially since there seemed to be something happening within Nexus' marketplace. Perfect. He always felt more comfortable in tiny crowds rather than big ones, but he certainly hated be alone more than anything, he'd come to find. The thirteenth took a bite of his make-shift sea-salt ice cream.
A sparkle glimmered in his eyes as the salt ignited against his tongue; he hummed quietly in delight and let his shoulders slump in a signal of relaxation. It wasn't exactly the same, but it would do... For now. With the plastic spoon still in his mouth, he smiled.
He took a few more bites before he spoke. "I always really liked it when you called me that. Roxy," Roxas suddenly commented upon the previous nickname, turning his head to examine the other's familiar features. The way that Axel talked to him certainly made it far too easy to forget all of those bad thoughts. It was a small piece of heaven that the keyblade bearer would finally let himself partake in. "It was something that only you did." His soft, drained voice was laced with sweetness. Maybe it was from that ice cream. "Guess that made it pretty special, huh?"
Something between best friends. After all this time, those little things hadn't been forgotten... And they still burned brightly.
"I tried to come up with something else to call you, but I never could." Why was he finding so much comfort in such meaningless small talk? Maybe it was because there was something deeper hidden there, something that his absence of heart was trying to convey that he didn't have the ability to understand. "So you could have something special that only I did." | COMMENTS | XXXXXX

Axel carefully paid for the ice cream once Roxas ordered his and handed him the cup, spoon securely in it. He couldn't carry both ice creams and Roxas himself all at once. He was good, but he wasn't quite that good. He took them away from the little shop, seeing that the street traffic had thinned. He didn't pay enough attention to Nexus to know something was drawing their attention, but it was a plus in this case. His little blond zombie wasn't feeling well so it was better for him right now. Axel could deal with just about anything, so it didn't matter to him.
He wandered back to the bench he had found the Key on and set him down. He didn't think this detail would be noticed give the state that the thirteenth was in. The redhead settled down and look in their surroundings. It wasn't quite right for ice cream considering what they were used to, but it would have to do. Maybe he would find a nice spot on a high rise to use for the next time now that they were reunited. He took the first bite of his strawberry ice cream and was surprised to find what seemed to be real strawberries in there. It was a pleasant enough treat that he thought a little better of this small shop. Maybe they took flavor requests.
Green eyes flicked to look at the Keyblade bearer and raised a brow. He made a small sound as the nickname that had just happened one day was appreciated. Interesting. He had never thought that a name had much meaning anymore. Lea was all but lost to time and Axel wasn't someone anyone had thought highly of, so what did his name matter? No one around here even knew it so being remembered, no matter what anyone was called, lost its draw. Still, he grinned at the blue eyed male next to him.
"Can't help you think of something for me. It wouldn't be special if I told you what to call me." Though, if he wanted to, he did have that other name he could offer up. Only Saix ever called him that anymore, but that left a bitter taste in his mouth and Roxas didn't need to know anything about the person he used to be. It wasn't important anymore. Someone who used to be one of his best friends had all the information he needed, and though this kind of thing was exactly what Roxas had left him for, he couldn't bring it up. He doubted he would ever bring it up on his own for various reason. Right now, one of the biggest ones was that he didn't want to poke at his own past. Plus, this was the first person from home he had seen and he wasn't getting pushed away. That was a major positive.
Axel settled back on the bench, his long legs stretching forward as he relaxed. It was just in appearance, but no one would know the difference. "How long have you been here? What have you been doing?" He asked, turning the focus onto the smaller Nobody. Considering that Roxas hadn't looked very good when Axel happened upon him, he knew there was nothing good going to come of this, but he would be able to help with that better than he could the more emotional things brewing between them.

"Guess you're right." You always are.
Roxas let a deep breath fill the darkest pit of his lungs, expanding his chest and letting a certain form of life take hold once more. It had been quite a long time since he'd felt anything like this. Since he'd felt. He was supposedly different than the other Nobodies of the Organization because he was connected to Sora... Because he was more human than the rest of them. Recently, though, he had felt the exact opposite. He felt robotic and meaningless; it was exhausting.
In the end, though, he could suppose he still felt sad. Sad and guilty - maybe all of that was a part of the concept of growth? These deep, intellectual thoughts were starting to make his head hurt... Maybe there was a reason he didn't stick to them very often.
He much more preferred listening to the redhead next to him and eating his ice cream. The cold, sweetened and salted taste reminded him heavily of back home. The castle didn't sound exactly inviting, but the apartment he'd made his own in the simulated Twilight Town did sound rather.. Comforting. He let his mind stray away from it, though. If he pondered on it for too long then it would become painful, and Roxas wasn't about to let anything ruin this for him. "I've been here for a couple of months, I think. I dunno.. It all started to kinda run together"
He paused, taking a couple more bites of his frozen treat to give himself time to put his thoughts together. "I take jobs fighting bad guys that no one else wants. It's all usually pretty routine." His melancholy voice once more faded, trailing off as his oceanic gaze glimmered with emotions far beyond any point of his own understanding. "What.. About you?"
Roxas turned to examine the eighth, his sharp jawline and fire red hair as familiar as ever. The keyblader felt safe, after the longest time. A gentle smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, a warmth spreading from the core of his being to ever fiber of his body. The longer he stared, the more hope, life and the joy of existing filtered in through his eyes. Everything was finally mending itself back into place.
Without even waiting for a response, Roxas threw out another question, a trait that he always possessed. Thankfully, the other Nobody always took it in stride.

Axel was making his way through his ice cream. He was letting the potentially painful conversation drop and fade away. He had chosen a topic that wasn't nearly as emotionally charged and he was glad for it. Talking about the facts of their new existence here was a lot easier than anything else. He gave a small nod as Roxas spoke, of course showing off his Sora in saying that he took up work fighting the bad guys. While it was his Somebody showing through, it was still a very Roxas thing to do.
The Flurry leaned over a little to steal a small spoonful of the salted caramel ice cream. It melted on his tongue and the slight saltiness was a welcomed flavor. He really needed to find a way to get some proper sea salt ice cream. That was a nice flavor, but it wasn't just right. He returned to eating his own ice cream as he answered the questions posed to him, "I've stopped paying attention to how long I've been here. The last time I bothered to figure out how long it had been a few weeks. That was a while ago." He had to be more careful about how he answered the second half since a lot of his work ended up not being very nice. Spying and basically kidnapping people wasn't exactly heroic work.
"I take odd jobs from where I can get them. Some things are pretty similar to what I did in the Organization." That was a suitably vague answer. One of the things that Roxas knew for certain he did was fight against Heartless, so if he chose to believe that they were in something of the same occupation, that was on him. He wasn't going to intentionally paint a worse picture of himself than there already was. No one really had much of an opinion on him other than those that hired him finding his work efficient and what they asked for.
The next question drew him back once more and he blinked. Obviously the blond needed someone to keep him from drowning. If what he had stumbled upon before was how he acted all the time now, then he couldn't leave the kid alone. "Yeah, I just finished a job so I have nothing to do." Even if he did, the answer would still be the same. That need to be with Roxas that had him desert the Organization in the first place kicked in even though he should say no. The Key of Destiny didn't deserve his kindness after what they went through. Axel might have deserved to be abandoned and the target of all that anger, but he didn't have to put himself in a position to get all of that again.
Yet, here he was, doing it anyway. He grinned over at Roxas as he set his mostly empty ice cream cup down. "Let's go find a decent hotel then. We'll at least have somewhere to crash once we're done doing ... whatever," He said, pushing himself to his feet. The ice cream was portable so it could come with them. He didn't think that this Link could be enough of a home for Roxas and that he would have a stable place here. Then again, unless it had been Lea or Isa's house, then the castle, nothing really looked like home to Axel. He didn't much fit anywhere anymore, so why bother with it?

It was... Strange. Most of the time whenever Axel spoke to him, he would hone in on the words and try to make sense of them. This time, he was so far gone, so damaged and literally broken that he couldn't bring himself to. While the redhead was telling him side of the story regarding being brought into this new, foreign place, Roxas could only let himself listen to the way that the eighth spoke. The timbre of his voice was so familiar, so comforting and supportive. It allowed him to forget all of the horrid things that he'd been feeling and gave him a chance to let the emotions he'd pushed away attempt to reform.
It was incredible, really. The effect that Axel had on him, even after just a few minutes of being reunited. Every time that the boy closed his eyes to blink, there was a fraction of a second where he worried to open them. What if all of this was a dream, one so beautiful that it made reality appear to be no more than a nightmare?
A decent hotel... Oh! Right! They would be staying together.
His stomach untwisted in relief at the thought of not having to go to sleep in a room all by himself again. He hated to sleep because of dreams - they would plague his slumber and make it impossible to actually rest. Tonight, however, he felt different. How pathetic... When he'd left the Organization, he had told himself he didn't need anyone other than himself. He'd find who he was, and he would live a life he could be proud of. In the end, he'd wound up being nothing more than a failure. A shattered fragment that had no other place but to go back into the bigger picture. He was displaced and never meant to be. Because of his existence, others suffered.
Because of his happiness, others were in pain.
Selfishly, he couldn't bring himself to care. Or maybe that was just what he told himself to make it easier.
Roxas got to his feet, only waiting for Axel to do the same before he slowly began to walk. He passed a trashcan and disposed of the empty ice cream up, his stomach happy to have something in it after quite some time. He'd have to get some real food eventually... But for now, this would suffice just fine. The blond boy was careful not to let himself get far away from the Flurry, and he made it blatantly obvious. He couldn't care anymore about appearing helpless or pathetically co-dependent. The fact of the matter was he was all those things, and it was about damn time he accepted it. At least while he was down and out, he could let himself succumb to it.
He smiled, looking up to the taller male who lead the way, just like he always did. When emerald eyes glanced down, they would see that usual star-struck look that constantly admired, wishing to be as independent and capable as Axel was. It was an admiration that was never really verbalized, but the two of them were always rather aware of it despite it all. Sometimes, when he looked at the redhead like this, he would be told to stop in a bashful voice, but that only pressed Roxas on even more.
Subconsciously, the thirteenth linked their arms together to keep them both firmly in place. While looking up towards Axel, Roxas tripped his right foot, though clumsily regained himself. It took him a few moments of dumbly blinking his eyes to laugh softly at himself, tightening his grip on the Nobody just a bit more.
He'd almost... Forgot what happiness felt like... | COMMENTS | XXXXXX

The Flurry ended up taking the lead as they got up from the bench they had been occupying. It always seemed to be him in the lead which he didn't really mind with Roxas. The only issue was that he had never really cared to figure out much of anything in the Links. They were worlds to wander though and accomplish a goal for someone else. There hadn't been anything before now for him to really pay attention to. Roxas was the first reason to want to stay somewhere on a more regular basis, but this was a tentative thing at best. Obviously the blond had been alone the entire time so any familiar face might have done. It was just luck that it was his former best friend that happened upon him so he knew they could be comfortable together.
Until something else flipped the Key's switch and he was angry at him again. The Flurry was just going to have to wait for that shoe to drop and try not to get too attached in the mean time. They continued further and he didn't feel the need to look down until he felt the smaller Nobody's arms link through his own. He blinked down at the motion and barely registered the look on the Key bearer's face. It took a second glance down to see such admiration. He never really knew what to do with that.
"Cut it out, Rox," He said quietly, using his free hand to guide Roxas to look forward so he didn't trip again. He had never really understand that look, knowing all the things that he had done and how much Roxas wouldn't approve of most of it. So, that was not a look he had earned, nor did he actually deserve it. He wasn't going to really comment more on it either as he focused on the sidewalk in front of them. The crowd was still thin which meant that there was less concern of trying to keep Roxas from walking into someone.
Thankfully, it didn't take long for Axel to find the usual strip of businesses and buildings he generally haunted when he was in Nexus, and he easily found the usual hotel from there. He might just be spending a night or two at any given time, but he was still going to pick a nice place. He walked in and nodded to the front desk attendant. His unique look since he hadn't changed from the Organization cloak was pretty recognizable, as was his bright red hair. The transaction was quick and the trip to the room equally so. He rarely was put above the second floor, so the pair was able to get to the room rather easily.
Disentangling himself from his short friend, Axel opened the door and took his boots off just inside the doorway. The cloak went next and ended up on the second bed in the room. His stomach turned a little, letting him know that the ice cream hadn't quite been enough. "You still hungry? We can get room service," The redhead said over his shoulder as he made his way to the window sill. It looked out onto the street they had just been walking down and thankfully the curtains were thick enough to shut out the light when they were closed.

Cut it out, Rox.
Hah, there it was. He figured that would come sooner or later. The blond did as he was told and looked ahead, tearing his gaze away from his best friend to examine the street in front of them. Maybe it was better if he could make himself stop doing that altogether. Ever since the beginning he childishly idolized Axel. He was always so in-control of everything, like he knew the answers to everything. He was cool. Roxas never felt he could be like that, even if he strove for it. Looking at it now, however, it was - well - pretty childish. They were stuck in a world unfamiliar to them and possibly were upsetting the very balance of everything.
And this is what the boy concerned himself with? Talk about idiotic.
Roxas let himself space out until they arrived at the hotel. They walked into the lobby and he gazed around, though hadn't unlocked himself from his best friend just yet. They'd waited to do that until they stepped into the room itself, and the keyblader sighed in relief at the sight of a bed. Axel had spoken to him as Roxas was busy getting rid of his boots and cloak, his sleeveless black vest and two-toned khaki pants making him feel much more comfortable.
"I'm okay." He said without thinking too much on it. He needed it eventually, but as for now, he didn't think he could stomach it. He'd been eating no more than a bird for the past few weeks, and with the lack of a cloak, it was unfortunately visible. His torso was thinner, as were his arms. His face, however, retained its boyish roundness making it hard to distinguish from facial features alone. Roxas slowly advanced toward the window to look out at the Nexus buildings and street they had been walking on just minutes before.
A glance upward and he could see the stars. They looked so far away from where they were, but the worlds were glimmering with hope. How he wished he could take just a sliver and give it to himself. When did the selfishness cease when it came to this boy? He did feel better with Axel by his side, he had to say, however. He hoped that he would be able to provide the same, but deep down... He knew. He brought pain wherever he went. "You don't have to do this, y'know." His tone was dull. He didn't look to his friend who stood next to him.
"You don't owe me anything. In fact it's kind of-" He paused, eyebrows pinching. "the other way around." The room fell eerily quiet, the only noise being that of the air conditioner below them, blowing cool upon their skin.
The truth was, Roxas was sick of being the cause of so much hurt. He remembered the way Axel looked when he gave himself up to save Sora, no - to save him. The mighty Flurry of Dancing Flames pathetically spoke about how he wanted no more than to see him. Because he made Axel feel alive. How would Roxas do that if all he did was bring the hurt back time and time again because his presence was nothing more than a constant reminder? He hated it. He hated what he'd done and there wasn't a thing he could do to change it other than --
He stopped himself.
"You should get something to eat. Don't worry about me." He finally looked up to the other Nobody, a weak, melancholy smile forming on his face. He turned and made his way to the nearest bed, taking a seat while letting his back rest against the headboard. Roxas tilted his head back and breathed outward a deep sigh. What a mess he had turned out to be...
What a pair they'd become. | COMMENTS | XXXXXX
