Quiet was an assassin for XOF in the 1980s, and one of her missions was to eliminate Big Boss after news spread that he had woken up from his nine-year coma. Skull Face had personally given her the mission because she was an elite assassin within their ranks. During her attempt to kill Big Boss, whom was going by the name "Ahab", Quiet was attacked by another patient - whom covered her in flammable liquid - medical grade ethanol - and set her on fire. She still tried to murder Big Boss, despite being on fire and in extreme pain - but after a second bottle of the flammable liquid - she ended up falling out of the window.[break]

Her body was found and taken to Code Talker, whom put her through parasite treatment. The parasites are what keep her alive, despite the fact her lungs are burnt to a crisp. From then on, she was unable to wear a lot of clothing, because she had to breathe through her skin - and, because of this, people referred to her as the "naked woman". Quiet also gained the unique ability to gain "nutrients" from the sun via. photosynthesis.[break]

In 1984, Skull Face had given Quiet a task to go to Afghanistan in order to eliminate any Soviet soldiers that were against the creation of the Metal Gear Sahelanthropus. She eventually caught sight of Venom Snake and proceeded to open fire on him, initiating a duel. After being defeated by Venom Snake in Afghanistan, Quiet became a prisoner at Mother Base. On their way to the base, the helicopter they were in was attacked by a fighter jet. After a tense few moments, Quiet jumped in to help by shooting a bullet through the pilot's head - displaying her skills to Snake before she emptied her ammo and made sure to keep still until they got to Mother Base.[break]

Despite her heroic act, Miller still didn't trust Quiet, and gave orders to shoot her if she tried to get on Mother Base. Snake warned her not to but she simply ignored him and jumped down from the helicopter and onto the base. Despite Miller being persistent about killing her, Ocelot and Venom Snake decided to lock her up instead.[break]

Because she was unable to speak English, she could not communicate with any of the Diamond Dog personnel. Messages from her often had to be conveyed through actions. During her days at Mother Base, she was cooperative with anything Diamond Dogs requested of her; the only exception was that she refused to wear clothes, and anyone who tried to put clothes on her ended up injured to the point of needing breathing tubes. Ocelot purposely locked her in a cell with a lock which he described as "a joke" to bait her into revealing her motives. This proved to be pointless as she changed her mind about wiping out Diamond Dogs.[break]

Ocelot later suggested Snake take her along on missions to form a bond, hoping it would make her break her silence as she refused any form of communication, even writing. Later on, she sneaked out of her cell to accompany Venom Snake on a mission, only to be caught by Miller, who was dead set against the idea. Ocelot, however, decided she could prove extremely useful in the field.[break]

During her time at Mother Base, the R&D team developed various kinds of armor for her - one being a coat of gold - and they also developed three, different sniper rifles for her. Two of them were lethal, and they were: 'Wicked Butterfly' and 'Sinful Butterfly'. The third one was non-lethal and it only put her victims to sleep, it was called: 'Guilty Butterfly'.[break]

A few months after being at Mother Base, Quiet attacked a Diamond Dog personnel because she could sense the Kikongo strain of the vocal cord parasite she also possessed - but her's was English. She couldn't communicate why she had attacked him, and the two men that came to his aid - so Ocelot and Venom Snake ended up locking her back up in her cell. But they soon found out why she had attacked the soldier, so she was forgiven for her actions.[break]

Quiet has shown many times that she can be pretty selfless. One example being where she retrieved a treasured item of the Mbele Squad - which was a necklace that had formerly belonged to their leader, Shabani - after it had ended up discarded into some chlorine disinfectant. She jumped in despite the cost of having significant portions of her skin burned from exposure to the gas. After undergoing an MRI, it was revealed to the Diamond Dogs that Quiet was the assassin who had been sent to kill Snake after he awoke in Cyprus - as they found a Star of Bethlehem petal inside the burnt remains of her lungs. They also found her own strain of the vocal cord parasite - causing Miller to go off again about killing her, but Ocelot calmed him down - pointing out that if she was sent to kill them, she would've done so already.After the three men left her be, and free from her restraints, Code Talker wheeled over to her and spoke to her in Navajo. Replying back in Navajo, Quiet revealed that Skull Face intended to use her as his ace in the hole against Venom Snake and his army, by having herself captured so that she could be taken to the Mother Base to infect everyone with the parasite. As a result, she decided to never speak English again.[break]

But the one time she did speak English was a surprise, especially for Pequod - whom, at the time, was attempting to contact an unconscious Snake through his radio. But because Snake had been bitten by a snake and was suffering from its venom - Quiet was the one to respond. When she responded to Pequod's call, she spoke in Navajo - but Pequod didn't understand what she was saying - so she had to resort to using English, much to her own surprise, as well as Pequod's. Eventually, Venom Snake was given an antivenom and Quiet disappeared - leaving a cassette tape hanging from a tree close to Snake's location.[break]

She even tried to shoot herself when Venom Snake decided to keep her alive - showing she could be very relentless.[break]

However, after being on the Mother Base for as long as she was: Quiet began to become a lot more caring, and she even began to change into a moral individual. After her capture, she was mostly indifferent and apathetic towards her situation, but she took an interest in Snake. She had feelings for the man, despite not being able to tell him her true feelings - she still stuck by him every step of the way. Because of her feelings for Snake, she became a more benevolent person.[break]
